  6. IMPORTING IMAGES TO OTHER APPLICATIONS

  8. Q1] Why do I sometimes get a black line across the top and bottom or along 
  9. the sides when I import images into PageMaker?
  10.  
  11. A1]  These symptoms sometimes appear when an image is being saved as a TIFF
  12. at 300 or 400 dpi line-art with a width exeeding 2 inches.  For optimal 
  13. performance importing into PageMaker, save your FotoTouch images as TIFF 
  14. UNCOMPRESSED or PCX.

  17. Q2]  When I try to import FotoTouch documents into WordPerfect, why do I 
  18. sometimes get the message "Invalid File Format."  
  19.  
  20. A2]  This message is generated when trying to open a TIFF file generated
  21. from FotoTouch.  For optimal performance importing into WordPerfect,
  22. save your FotoTouch images as TIFF UNCOMPRESSED or PCX.

  24. Q3]  How do I use ClipBoard in Windows to take a picture from FotoTouch to 
  25. Other Applications?
  26.  
  27. A3]  Follow the steps below:
  28. 1.  Scan an image and select an area to copy to the Clipboard using 
  29.     the Selection Tool.
  30. 2.  Select Copy from the EDIT menu.
  31. 3.  Iconize FotoTouch. (Do not Quit or Image will be lost).
  32. 4.  Bring forward the other Application and select PASTE from the EDIT menu.
  33.  
  34. This technique works with images which do not use more than 64K of memory 
  35. to store. For Images which use more memory than this, we recommend saving
  36. the images to whatever format the target application will support.

  39. PRINTING
  40.  
  41. Q4]  Why is FotoTouch printing blank pages?
  42.  
  43. A4]  There are a few possibilities:
  44. 1.  Bitstream Facelift.  See FaxBack document 2404.
  45. 2.  Some non-Postscript printer drivers (notably Hewlett Packard) allow 
  46. you to choose a gray scale option under OUTPUT FORMAT.  Selecting one of
  47. these gray scale options (256 or 64 Gray Scale) will result in a blank
  48. page.  Choose Error Diffused or Dithered instead.

  51. SCANNING 
  52.  
  53. Q5]  When I start FotoTouch, I receive an "Error Reading Drive D: (or E:)."
  54. What is happening?
  55.  
  56. A5]  FotoTouch comes with a built in Image Memory Manager (IMM) which works
  57. independently of Windows' built-in memory manager.  Whenever FotoTouch is 
  58. launched, it searches drives C:, D:, and E: for the drive with the most free 
  59. space in order to use this drive for temporary storage of images. This is fine 
  60. in most situations.  However, if you have a non-hard drive (CD ROM, floppy 
  61. drive, etc.) designated as drive D: or E:, FotoTouch will be unable to read 
  62. from this drive.

  64. To correct the problem, go into the WIN.INI file and insert the following 
  65. line in the [Logitech FotoTouch] section :
  66.         
  67.         Temp2=drive:\directory
  68.         (For example, Temp2=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP)
  69.  
  70. This will instruct FotoTouch to use a specific drive and directory for the 
  71. temporary storage of images and will not do the automatic search.

  74. Q6]  When I select Acquire in FotoTouch, I receive "an error reading drive D:
  75. (or E:)."  What's wrong?
  76.  
  77. A6]  Whenever you select Acquire from the File menu, you are actually leaving 
  78. the FotoTouch application and starting the ScanMan application. So the Temp2 
  79. line in the WIN.INI file won't work here because we are no longer in 
  80. FotoTouch. The problem is occurring for the same reason but there is a 
  81. different solution along the same lines. Go into the SCANMAN.INI file. About 
  82. 14 lines down you will see the following line:
  83.         
  84.         ;Temp2Path=c:\tmp
  85.  
  86. Remove the leading semicolon (since this means this line is a comment in an 
  87. INI file) and change the drive and directory to a valid directory. 
  88. For example:
  89.  
  90.         Temp2Path=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
  91.  
  92.  
  93. This will keep the ScanMan software from searching for a drive to use for 
  94. temporary storage.
  95.

  97. COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
  98.  
  99. FotoTouch and the Intel SatisFAXtion Board
  100.  
  101. Version 2.10 of FotoTouch does not support the ScanMan 256 when plugged into
  102. the Intel SatisFAXtion Card.  If you are using the scanner in this 
  103. configuration and purchased FotoTouch as an upgrade, please make sure
  104. you have version 2.11 of the software.  To verify this version, look at the 
  105. last three digits of the serial number on disk 1 of the FotoTouch disks.  If
  106. it ends with 211, this is the correct version.  If it ends with 210, an 
  107. upgrade will be needed.  Please contact our Sales Information Services

  111. FotoTouch and the Plus HardCard
  112. The Plus HardCard requires a device driver in the CONFIG.SYS file and 
  113. uses IRQ 11, which will conflict with the scanner's default IRQ setting.
  114. Symptoms include system locking when selecting Acquire and drive read errors 
  115. when selecting Acquire. The scanner must be set on another IRQ setting. Go 
  116. into the SCANMAN.INI file and change the interrupt setting (which is at the 
  117. bottom of the file).

  120. PCTOOLS
  121.  
  122. PC Tools and PC Backup sometimes make changes to the Windows SYSTEM.INI 
  123. file which cause erratic behavior with the Logitech Scanner.  The scanner
  124. will typically work properly in Standard mode, but in Enhanced mode it will
  125. generate an Unrecoverable Application Error in Windows 3.0, or will not
  126. access the scanner in Windows 3.1.
  127.  
  128. Look for the following lines in the SYSTEM.INI file, in the [386Enh] section:
  129.         
  130.         device=vfd.386
  131.         device=vdmad.386
  132.  
  133. If these lines exist, then PC Tools has replaced the Windows virtual floppy 
  134. driver and the Windows virtual DMA driver with another version. You can  
  135. reset Windows back to its own drivers by changing the lines to:
  136.  
  137.         device=*vfd
  138.         device=*vdmad
  139.  
  140. This will disable the PC Tools backup program. 
  141.  
  142.  
  143. Central Point's Anti-Virus
  144.  
  145. If you run FotoTouch while Central Point's Anti-Virus program is active, you
  146. will receive unexpected results.  Some of the known error messages include 
  147. "Warning! TOUCH.EXE is Being Modified" and "Unexpected DOS Error 5."  After 
  148. displaying the message, the Anti-Virus program will often lock up the 
  149. system.  If you receive these messages, disable the anti-virus software when
  150. running FotoTouch.

  153. ATI Ultra and Vantage Video Cards
  154.  
  155. These are high performance 8514 compatible video cards. They come with a 
  156. wide variety of video drivers for Windows. One of these drivers is called the 
  157. Crystal Fonts driver. If you are using this driver you will receive colors
  158. in the image instead of grays.  If this occurs, select a different video
  159. driver.
  160.

  162. OS/2
  163. In the OS/2 README file there is a listing of applications which are known 
  164. to be problematic or won't function under the OS/2 environment.  Logitech 
  165. Ansel (now upgraded to FotoTouch) and Logitech Perceive are both mentioned 
  166. in this list of programs.
  167.  
  168. While the applications themselves seem to function under OS/2 2.0, 
  169. incompatibilities occur when accessing or using the scanner. It is simply 
  170. that the hardware device drivers written to support these devices were 
  171. written for the Windows 3.0 or 3.1 environment, not the OS/2 environment.
  172.  
  173. When we first contacted IBM about problems trying to scan with the ScanMan 
  174. 256 in the Windows compatibility box of OS/2, they provided the following 
  175. reasons for this incompatibility:
  176.  
  177. - FotoTouch cannot work because of an incomplete implementation of OS/2 4B 
  178. interrupt.  (create DOS thread)
  179.  
  180. - They issued a Corrective Action Request, and said they will correct it in 
  181. the next version.
  182.  
  183. - They have now a new version supporting the Windows 3.1 compatibility mode, 
  184. and it still does not support our software and scanner interface.
  185.  
  186. We have been in continuous contact with IBM and are currently working with 
  187. them to try to resolve this issue.  
  188.  
  189. Logitech does not currently produce an OS/2 scanner or application.  Apart 
  190. from working with IBM to resolve the incompatibilities within the Windows 
  191. compatibility box, we are also investigating the possibility of a scanning 
  192. product which will interface directly with OS/2.  If you are interested in

  200. Expanded Memory Managers (EMM386 and QEMM) and Standard Mode
  201.  
  202. On some systems, the presence of an expanded memory manager will conflict
  203. with FotoTouch when run in Windows in Standard Mode.  The symptom is that
  204. no scanner activity is detected when you select Acquire.  The optimum
  205. solution is to run Windows in Enhanced Mode.  If the computer will not
  206. run in Enhanced mode, disable the expanded memory manager.

  209. OTHER ISSUES

  211. MicroChannel Machines (MCA)
  212.  
  213. If you are using a microchannel computer (PS/2 Model 50 and higher), but 
  214. are not using the ScanMan Model 256, you must have the most recent scanner
  215. board along with FotoTouch.  The application will not function with the
  216. original microchannel board which accompanied the ScanMan Plus.  To obtain
  217. information about upgrading your microchannel board, contact our Sales

  221. Ami Pro Macro for FotoTouch
  222. There are complete instructions on how to install the Ami Pro macro for 
  223. FotoTouch in the TOUCH.SAM Ami Pro document. For instructions on installing
  224. this macro, we recommend reading (and printing out) the entire document.
  225. For the Macro to work, FotoTouch must be running.  If you plan on using 
  226. the macro, first start FotoTouch, then minimize it, then start Ami Pro.
  227. The FotoTouch 2.1 macro will work with Ami Pro 1.2b and 2.0.
